What Is Botox?

Botox Cosmetic is a prescription neuromodulator containing onabotulinumtoxinA, a purified form of botulinum toxin type A. It temporarily relaxes selected muscles to soften dynamic wrinkles—the lines that appear when you frown, smile, squint or raise your eyebrows.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox partially blocks the nerve signals that cause targeted muscles to contract. As muscle movement decreases, the overlying skin appears smoother and expression lines become less noticeable. The effect is temporary and gradually wears off as normal nerve-to-muscle communication returns.

What Happens During Treatment?

Your appointment begins with a consultation and facial assessment. Your physician injector will observe how your muscles move, discuss your goals and determine the appropriate placement and dosage.

The injections are administered using a very fine needle and usually take 10–20 minutes. Most clients describe the sensation as a quick pinch, and comfort measures can be provided when needed.

When Will I See Results?

You may begin noticing a change within 3–5 days, with results generally settling over 10–14 days. Results commonly last approximately 3–4 months, although longevity varies depending on the treatment area, dosage, muscle strength and individual metabolism.

Botox does not have to eliminate all facial movement. Your physician can customize the dosage and placement to soften lines while preserving natural expression.

Most clients describe the injections as brief pinches. A very fine needle is used, and the procedure is usually completed within 10–20 minutes.

The number of units depends on your anatomy, muscle strength, treatment area and desired degree of movement. Your physician will determine the appropriate dosage after assessing you in person.

Early changes may appear within 3–5 days. Allow approximately 10–14 days for the result to fully develop.

Results commonly last 3–4 months. Duration varies by person, dosage and treatment area.

Many clients schedule maintenance treatments every 3–4 months. Treatments should not be performed more frequently than recommended by your physician.

Botox requires minimal downtime. You may experience temporary redness, small bumps, tenderness or bruising at the injection sites.

Botox reduces selected muscle movement to soften dynamic wrinkles. Dermal fillers add or restore volume and are used for different concerns. Some treatment plans may include both.
